December 09, 2017 – Weekend Market Comment

December 9, 2017 – The Dow Jones industrial average rose 83 points, while the S&P 500 gained 0.4 percent with health care rising more than 1 percent. The NASDAQ composite jumped 0.5 percent, as shares of Amazon, Netflix and Alphabet rose. 

Most of the gains can be paced on the job report. The U.S. economy added 228,000 jobs last month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Economists polled by Reuters expected a gain of 200,000. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1 percent.

December 02, 2017 – Weekend Market Comment

December 2, 2017 – The S&P 500 declined 0.2 percent to close at 2,642.22 and fell as much 1.4 percent. In what amounted to the wildest trading day since the election, the S&P 500 traded in a range of 1.71 percent, the widest since Nov. 9, 2016. The Nasdaq composite lagged, pulling back 0.4 percent to 6,847.59; it had dropped as much as 1.99 percent at its session lows. Gold and Treasurys spiked higher following the ABC report as investors fled to market safe havens.

November 25, 2017 – Weekend Market Comment

November 25, 2017 – The S&P 500 hit record highs, rising 0.2 percent to 2,602.42 with information technology as the best-performing sector. Macy's was among the best-performing stocks in the index despite their POS tills freezing up on Black Friday. The S&P 500 also closed above 2,600 for the first time. 

The NASDAQ composite climbed 0.3 percent to 6,889.16, posting intraday and closing records as shares of Amazon gained 2.6 percent to a record. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 31.81 points to finish at 23,557.99, with Visa leading advancers on the 30-stock index. The Dow also closed near a record closing high.
